How Roofing Maintenance Can Extend The Life Of Your Roof

It has been proven that by maintaining the quality of your roof, it will add an additional 5 to 10 years of life to it before it needs to be re-roofed again. This is why at Tallent Construction/ Roofing Chattanooga we provide roofing maintenance services to all of our clients helping them save money by extending the life of their roof.

Whether your roof is old or new, the following 5 maintenance tasks can help extend the life of your roof and protect your home from major damages which could destroy your home.

Remove all branches, twigs leaves and other debris

Branches, leaves, twigs (and other debris from mother nature) can rot on your roof and turn into soil for seeds to begin growing on your roof. The roots can then dig through destroying your shingles and roof causing leaks to form in your roof without you even knowing about it. This can also cause the water to catch (or build up on your roof) making it rot and decay much faster.

It is highly recommended that you keep your roof clean from all debris. If you choose to take care of it yourself, then we recommend picking a clear sunny day so you are less likely to slip and fall. It is also highly recommended that you have a safety harness and someone holding the ladder firm at the bottom to make sure no life threatening accidents occur.

Have Your Roof Inspected For These Top 7 Issues?

It is important to check your roof periodically to make sure that none of the following signs of wear and tear have started to occur. Just spending a few minutes to check for these types of issues can save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

  1. Water stains on the inside of your attic, roof or trusses.
  2. Water stains on your insulation or the ceilings
  3. Shingles that are sticking up, off of your roof or are loose or have shifted
  4. Moss mold or mildew growing on top of or underneath your shingles
  5. Tiny cracks or punctures on your shingles (often times hard to spot)
  6. The flashing of your roof starting to come off from the surface of your home
  7. Roofing nails starting to come up through the shingles from the surface of your roof

If you notice any of these things with your roof it is crucially important to get this fixed right away before it gets any worse and leads to some senior damages to your roof or your house in general.

NOTE: if you see these things in one spot then it is more than likely ok to have your roof repairs. But if you see these situations in multiple areas of your roof then it is crucial to have your roof inspected for free by Tallent Construction/ Roofing Chattanooga. Otherwise, your insurance may not pay for the damage. (instead they might blame you (the homeowner) for not taking proper care of your roof.

Remove all moss, mold and mildew

Many people have been known to scrape moss off their roof with a hoe, shovel or scraper of some type. Do NOT do this! Otherwise, you are very likely to cause further damage to your roof than what has already been done.

When we remove mold or mildew from a client's roof we always use a special moss and mildew remover spray to break up the debris causing it to separate itself from the shingles and begin to fall off. Then we use a soft brush (such as a very soft broom) to gently sweep it off the roof without damaging the shingles.

If you choose to do this yourself, be sure to follow the instructions on the cleaning fluid and do not scrub the shingles to the point that the gravel begins to come off.

And by all means, never use a pressure washer to try to clean off your shingles. Otherwise you may very easily strip away the UV protective granules and damage your shingles even more than they are currently damaged.

Wash out all gutters, fascia, soffits, and downspouts

If you want to keep your roof clean, giving it a much longer lifespan, then cleaning out all of the leaves and tree droppings from within your gutters and downspouts is a complete necessity. After scoping out as much of the leaves, dirt and twigs from the gutters, we recommend using a soft bristled brush to gently scrub away any leftover dirt and debris in your gutters. Once you feel you have cleaned your gutters to their full extent, you can then use running water from the hose to wash away and left over remains. Repeat these steps for the fascia and soffits until you feel they are clean and just like new.

Next you can try pouring water from a bucket or hose directly into your downspouts pushing all leaves, pine needles, twigs and debris out of the gutter downspouts. If the water gets clogged then try running a plumber’s drain snake down the gutter breaking up dirt, leaves, nuts and twigs that might be clogging up your gutters. Do this until the water easily flushes down the gutter system into the drain.

Check for cracks or breaks in the seal of your chimney, skylights and vents

Now that your roof and gutters have been thoroughly cleaned, it's time to check for damaged or missing caulk seal, peeling paint, rotting soffits or holes in the facias and other areas of your roof. You will want to use a soft brush to lightly and gently brush off all areas to see if anything may be loose or deteriorating. Be sure to use protective gloves and eyewear as the roof granules can cut into your skin causing infection and pain.

If you find any loose or rooting sections of your roof or gutters, it is important to call a professional roofing company like Tallent Roofing Chattanooga to take a professional look at your damaged gutters and roofs and give you our own professional input as to if it worth resolving now before it gets any worse. Our team of professional roofers have been trained and certified and will give you the best advice on how to take care of your roof making it last for many more years to come.

If you want to get the most life out of your roof then we recommend taking these 5 steps at least twice a year. This will in turn keep your roof healthy and protected adding many more years onto the life of your roof.
